Natural remedies for treatment diarrhea in Dogs - A complete Guide for treating diarrhea on DOGS

Hi all pet lovers ..... Yesterday came to my clinic a 3 years old snouzier and shitzu mix with recurrent diarrhea for 2 days ..... I gave the owner some advises about feeding so as to stop this type of diarrhea .but let us talk first about what can cause diarrhea in dogs :

- Sometimes a too much protein diet causes soft stool.

- Bacterial and parasitic infections as : some protozoan parasite e.g  Giardia spp.
So dogs have to be checked for intestinal parisites and Giardia Some clinics check for it by doing a Direct Fecal not just a float and some do a Giardia Snap Test.
Giardia comes from stagnate  infected water or contaminated foods where animals or humans have defecated in.

- Giardia, salmonella, certain algae can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
- Lots of toxins in lake water,
- leptospirosis infections.
- Worms infections : e,g tapeworms infections and heart worms
- Some dogs may have a super sensitive stomach. That can not tolerate food well and causing diarrhea. In this case you can buy him good food from a pet store that is for sensitive stomach. Keep his diet simple.

- GSDs can sometimes have protein losing enteropathy or other GI diseases that need medication with every meal.

- Often times allergies can manifest as GI issues when it is a protein sensitivity. ProPlan SSS that you have purchased for him is a great food. I have 2 allergy kiddos and they have responded really well to it. The protein is salmon and they don't cross contaminate it with chicken or beef. Just be sure not to give any treats that are based in any protein other than salmon while you are waiting to see if this helps and remember it can take up to 6 weeks before you see full results.

-Viral infections as Parvo virus .

- Orange poop is either pancreatitis or liver issue. If it's a darker orange it may be moving through gastrointestinal tract to quickly being a biliary issue.

Management and treatment of diarrhea in dogs :

1- Firstly and most important you must give him plenty of water . Diarrhea leads to dehydration. Dehydration leads to more diarrhea and worse symptoms .you need to make sure he gets plenty of fluids so he doesn’t become dehydrated.
If your dog is not drinking water then it is a bad sign and need emergency vet care .
About 2/3 cups of it I’d say. You had to trick him a bit to drink, gave him a small handful of food with the water. He ate the food and drank all the water .Try the pure pumpkin,Or boiled rice and boiled hamburger also does the trick.

- Flagyl Syrup twice to treat super sensitive stomach .

2-
Change the food.
The best thing to do is keep it simple foods. For safe inexpensive many have success with pro plan sensitive stomach and skin, but the best is to give Hill's ID. It sounds as if he may have IBD and there is a great Facebook page for canines with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
- You can try keeping your dog on royal canine g.i. for a couple weeks to help support his gastrointestinal tract and see if it helps. Also giving a probiotic, or some yogurt can help. But def try the food.

- Give him premade raw meal for a day or two he should be back to normal.
- Change his food Costco dog food is better , Costco food is the best for my dogs never had any complaints.

- Rice with chicken or beef broth is always a go to for dogs in diarrhea.

- Boil chicken breasts, tear up and mix with rice, or boiled hamburger with rice.

- Pure pumpkin ,just make sure to look up the amount of pumpkin to give.Brands like pedigree, iams, ol Roy, and purina are horrible foods. Try getting 100% pumpkin not the pie filling kind. Don’t give too much cause it can give the opposit effect.

- plain yogurt is very helpful in treating diarrhea .

- Poor Zeus.

- Feed rice and chicken no seasoning... Its a bland diet to help with tummy issues/diarrhea.

- Use Fromms. It a bit expensive but very high quality.

- Try limited ingredient food, I recommend Canidae pure line.
-Put him m back on prescription and try canned much better. People say stay away from Purina but the sensitive skin and stomach has helped many dogs. So don't be afraid to try it. Also for right now try to keep the foods simple not so many ingredients.
- Psyllium husk powder

3. Give yogurt - You can include Greek yogurt in his meal as well.

4- If you suspect worm infestations : Try a dewormer this time may be it will help once he recovers you should be good. Also make sure you are keeping him hydrated. Little bit sugar and sea salt in water will make a good hydrator with yogurt in it adds more benefits.

- In worms infections after finishing rounds of dewormers as for the diarrhea a doggie probiotic called fortiflora will help.

Note some drugs may cause diarrhea especially dewormers as Drontal ." Effects: Drontal is tolerated well in most cases. Salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, incoordination, and loss of appetite may be observed."

- For intestinal imbalance you can try Proviable " The Proviable capsules are once every 24 hours. The Proviable paste is noted on the package as to the dose to be given, and is due every 6-8 hours for the first 2-3 days, then discontinue."

- Make sure the chicken you’re feeding is not fatty. Skin and stuff is too fatty.

- fasting for 8 hours or a period of time and see if the diarrhea subsides.

- And when reintroducing the chicken and rice, start very small like a 1/4 cup at a time and see how they do after a while. Also! In the baby aisle, there is unflavored pedialyte which is great when added to their water to replenish electrolytes.

- For Puppy in Diarrhea : He needs a balanced diet with the essential nutrients as a puppy. You can also go to BalanceIt website and create a balanced homemade with essential vitamins they are from UC Davis. Purina is a good food as long as you stay on the focus product. I know many breeders and dog trainers and agility dogs that use Purina with great results.

- Puppy's can have runny poop for many reason. Switching food can give them the runs along with stress of moving to a new home is enough to cause it. Try sticking with one brand off food and keeping him in it for a few weeks see if it sorts out if not then you can consider a food allergy to something.

Questions to be asked to a dog in diarrhea :
- Have they run a fecal to check for parasites?

Is he on a monthly heartworm and parasite prevention?

- Have you discussed the possibility of allergies?

- did they test him for parvo ?

Have you tried giving him 100% pure pumpkin?

- Did you change her food? Does she pick things up on walks or around the house? New treats/bones? Any vitamins or supplements?

- Is he getting into anything he shouldn't be? Is it dark tar like blood or red blood?

- Have you considered raw feed?

- Have you tried only giving him meat? Or less biscuits with a bit of meat too?

-

If diarrhea is accompanied with vomiting : Did they do radio-graphs to rule out an obstruction? Any puppy that age with vomiting diarrhea will become quickly dehydrated.. fluids would be a good idea. The glucose isn’t for dehydration it’s for his blood sugar. If he’s lethargic and passing minimal stool and vomiting id be getting abdominal xrays done.....

- Diarrhea mixed w vomiting is a sign that there could be something in his stomach ( like he ate something). May need an ultrasound. Not drinking water is the alarms.Take him to a veterinarian ..
