CANINE PARVOVIRUS ENTERITIS INFECTION CPE



1- INTRODUCTION :

Canine Parvovirus Enteritis , CPE , Canine Parovirus, Paroviral infection or Hemorrhagic Enteritis is an Acute contagious Disease of dogs and canines characterized by sudden onset of fever , vomiting and dysentery leading to Dehydration , leukopenia and death.
The disease is wide soread all over the world causing severe losses in dogs .

2- CAUSES OF PARVOVIRUS :

CPE is caused by canine parovirus type 2 CPV type 2
Family Parvoviridae . 

3- SIGNS and SYMPTOMS OF PARVOVIRUS INFECTION IN DOGS :

- In  young puppies sudden death may occur as it affect heart causing myocarditis .
-  Incubation period of Parvovirus infection may 1-3 days through these period viraemia may occur causing fever and pyrexia . 
- Vomiting 
- Dysentery or Hemorrhagic enteritis .


- Leukopenia and Dehydration due to vomiting and bloody diarrhea  . 
- Depression and anorexia  .
- Lymphopenia 
- Abdominal discomfort .
- Weight Loss .

4- Diagnosis of Parvovirus in Dogs :

- From clinical signs " Vomiting , Bloody diarrhea , sudden onset, pyrexia ,and off food "
- Laboratory Diagnosis of parvovirus :
- Em can detect the virus in its early stages 
- Hematology and serum separation .
- Tissue samples can be examined by immunoflourscence or immunoperoxidase .
- ELISA tests can be used in stool sample to detect the parvovirus.

5- TREATMENT OF PARVOVIRUS ENTERITIS INFECTIONS IN DOGS : 

- Food and water must be withheld from 12- 24 hours .
- Intravenous infusion therapy with saline and ringer solutions to avoid dehydration and compensate off food .
- Wide spectrum antibiotics " Ampicillin and Gentamycin can be used  for 3 successive days .
- In cases of low blood sugar levels 5% DEXTROSE with amino acids and bicarbonate must be used.
- Other medication might be used as vitamin B complex and Dexamethasone and oral use of antibiotics .


6- HOW TO PREVENT PARVOVIRUS INFECTIONS IN DOGS :

- Hygienic measures in infected areas .
- Isolation of infected dogs .
- Thoroughly cleaning of dog dwellings .
- Vaccination using Bivalent parvo and distemper living attenuated vaccine or using Trivalent vaccine " Rabies, Distemper , and Parvovirus " .
- The vaccine is given at 3 months of age by subcutaneous injection gives immunity for about an year and can be repeated annually .
