Canine Distemper : CD Signs , Treatment and Prevention
1- Introduction :
Canine Distemper synonyms : CD , hard pad disease " OIE list "
I|t is An infectious viral disease of canines especially dogs and fox characterizes by sudden onset of fever , gastroenteritis , conjunctivitis , bronchitis , encephalitis , nervous symptoms and hardening of nose and pads " hard pad disease .
2- Causes:
Canine Distemper is caused by a virus called Canine Distemper Virus " CDV"
This disease is mainly transmitted to dogs by Aerosol transmission or droplet from infected dogs .
3- Signs :
- Incubation period is casually from 2-7 days .
- Bronchitis and pneumonia with greenish yellow purulent nasal discharge .
- Loss of appetite and dehydration
- Cough and vomiting .
- Nervous symptoms : Ataxia , Straddling Gait , Paresis .
Blindness and encephalitis after few months of infection
- Padding of pads and nose
- Excessive dandruff throughout the coat of the dog .
4- Diagnosis :
1- From the clinical signs " Nervous signs , padding , pneumonia "
2- Laboratory Diagnosis :
- ELISA and IIF
Serology
5- TREATMENT :
- Symptomatic Treatment :
- Using hygienic measures to avoid infection or transmission of infection by cleaning using disinfectant in dog habitats as the virus is excreted in all nasal discharge and all body excretion.
- General Tonics to affected dog to compensate loss of appetite .
- Using antibiotics ti eliminate the secondary infections as : Amoxicillin 20-40 mg|Kg\day divided in 3 doses or you can use sulfa .
- Intravenous injection of saline and fluid therapy to avoid dehydration and loss of electrolytes .
- Anticonvulsants and analgesics or sedative drugs to control neurological signs .
6- Prevention and control :
1- - Using hygienic measures to avoid infection or transmission of infection by cleaning using disinfectant in dog habitats as the virus is excreted in all nasal discharge and all body excretion.

2- Vaccination against CD disease is by using modified live attenuated vaccine at 3 months age 1 cm |s.c gives immunity for 1 year
