Mental Stimulation - Keep Your Dog or Cat Busy
Welcome to veterinarians guide and today we're gonna talk about mental stimulation for pets.
What is Mental Stimulation for your pets ?
-Mental Stimulation means giving your dog something to do in a mental sense and a cognitive sense that can look like problem solving or searching for something or just keeping them thinking and keeping their mind active .
Why do I need to do this ?
why is this important ?
Importance of mental stimulation :
1 - It depends on what sort of dog you have and more specifically what your dog's personality is .
There are dogs out there who are perfectly content to sort of hang around all day and not do a whole lot I actually have two of those dogs at home and they'll sit on the couch and they'll sleep all day and they seem like they're quite happy about it until it's time for them to go out and play and do things other dogs other dogs really need something to do.
2- Dogs are just very high-energy they're always looking for stimulation and and when they don't get that kind of stimulation either physical or mental this is when dogs sometimes get themselves into trouble ,they start chewing on things that they shouldn't be chewing on their barking excessively ,they're trying to escape these sorts of things .
So giving them these things to do can be really beneficial not only for the dog but potentially beneficial for your house and your neighbors as well .
How To Keep Your Dog Busy at Home ?
How to Mentally stimulate your dog ?
1 - Some of the options are hiding treats around the house and letting the dog kind of prowl around the house looking to find the treats ,also you can buy buy puzzle toys for dogs that they have to kind of sort out the puzzle in order to get a treat at the end of the puzzle .
2- There's also food bowls that are kind of sort of like puzzles if you will in it and it and it slows the dog down and makes them think about what they're doing and what they're eating .
Another thing is like taking something like a Kong and stuffing that with food and having them kind of work at that for a little while to work on getting the food out .
All of these things are things that effectively occupy your dog's mind and their thoughts and give them something to do it's a little bit like having a small child that's bored (bored children have a real tendency to get themselves into trouble and the same thing is true for for dogs )
3- If you have a dog with a high energy type personality so anything that you can do to keep these guys mentally occupied when they're at home and not doing much to keep them busy in between those times .
4-When you're able to take them out and they can really get some some physical and mental stimulation the outdoors is a really great idea .
Finally ,
- So those are some great options for you to kind of keep your dog thinking and keep them occupied and hopefully that'll help keep them out of trouble .
