Definition
of Feline Immunodeficiency Syndrome:
It is
acute infectious disease in cats characterized by long lasting immunity suppression,
anorexia, weight loss, anemia, gingivitis, pyrexia, diarrhea, rhinitis,
dermatitis neurological signs and abortions.
Causes of Feline
Immunodeficiency Syndrome:
FIS virus
belongs to retrovirus which is lentivirus causative agent of human AIDS.
Signs of Feline
Immunodeficiency Syndrome:

Signs of disease are chronic and may last for 2 years.

Diarrhea : Persistent and do not respond to treatment ,
-
Gingivitis and Stomatitis.
-
Lymphadenopathy causing decrease in immunity system.
-
Fever.
-
Wasting and anemia .
-
Dermatitis.
-
Increased Secondary infections due to low immunity.
Diagnosis of
Feline Immunodeficiency Syndrome:
-
From clinical signs “ anemia , diarrhea, fever , decrease
weight and increase rate of secondary infections “
-
ELISA test can be used to detect FIS antibodies in specimen
of the infected cats.
-
Virus isolation and antigen detection can be used.
-
Serological tests.
Treatment
of Feline Immunodeficiency Syndrome:
-
No specific treatment is generally used to treat FIS
-
Supportive treatment as tonics and electrolytes may be used
-
Wide spectrum antibiotics and anti mycotic may be used to
decrease secondary infections ,
-
Immune supportive drugs should be used .
-
ROFERON “Human recombinant alpha interferon “Diluted in
saline and given by mouth “ orally “ at dose 30 units/day for 7 days .
-
Nutritional supplements to help in compensating anemia and
anorexia .
-
Gingivitis and Stomatitis are refractory to the treatment.
Prevention
and Control of Feline Immunodeficiency Syndrome:

Avoid contact with infected animals
-
Test newly introduced cats for FIS before pitting them with
your cats.
