Mange in Dogs and Cats

Definition :

It is an Infectious skin disease characterized by dermatitis , itching, hair loss and redness and inflammation of the skin .

Causes:

In dogs: Sarcoptic mange.   " Canine scabies"
In cats :Notedric mange or Notredes cats   " Feline scabies".

Signs of mange infections in pet animals :

- Severe itching may be accompanied with bleeding.
- Redness and inflammation of the affected area of skin.
- Hair loss.
- Biting or scratching the affected area.
- Some animals be nervous and restless.
- Pruritis and dermatitis .


- From clinical signs " Itching, hair loss, scratching and restlessness "
- Laboratory Diagnosis :
Skin sample examined microscopically to detect scabies.

Treatment of mange in dogs and cats:

- Topical application of cream that kill scabies.
- Washing the animal with pesticide solutions can be effective but care to avoid your pet toxicity.
- Ivermectins subcutaneous injections are very helpful to get rid of this infection.
- Steroid creams may be used to reduce inflammation of the skin.
- wide spectrum antibiotics to avoid secondary infections in case of bleeding.
- The treatment must be continuous until all the signs disappear completely .
