Common Causes of Diarrhea in Dogs & How to Stop It


Diarrhea is a common health issue that has many causes and can affect dramatically animal health and in severe causes may led to dehydration ,hypothermia and even death .
So it is very important to keep your pet healthy and fight diarrhea if present as soon s you can.
Untreated diarrhea can  cause loss of minerals from body causing secondary complications.

There are main 7 etiological causes of diarrhea in pets that you must know as they will make a great difference while treatment .

1- Dietary cause or Dietary changes: 

The main cause of diarrhea in dogs and cats is the sudden change in food type.
Changes in diet, whether intentional or accidental, can cause digestive upset and diarrhea.

2- Food intolerance/allergy: 

Some pets may have a sensitivity or allergy to certain ingredients in their food that can lead to diarrhea.

3-Infections: 

This is the second largest cause of diarrhea in dogs and cats 
Bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections can all cause diarrhea in pets.

4-Medications: 

Certain medications can cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea as a side effect.

5-Stress: 

Stressful situations, such as moving to a new home or having visitors in the house, can cause diarrhea in pets.

6-Inflammatory bowel disease " IBD ": 

This is a chronic condition that causes inflammation of the intestines, leading to diarrhea and other symptoms.

7-Pancreatitis: 

Inflammation of the pancreas can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea.

In case of your dog or cat show diarrhea here are some helpful tips to do with your dog or cat to ensure secondary complications :


-Keep Your Pet Hydrated: Ensure that your pet has access to clean, fresh water at all times. You may also need to offer them an electrolyte solution to help replace any lost fluids.

-Adjust their diet: Feed your pet small, frequent meals of a bland diet consisting of boiled chicken and rice or a prescription diet recommended by your veterinarian. Avoid feeding them any treats or table scraps.

- Probiotics: Probiotic supplements can help to restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut. Consult with your veterinarian for recommendations on which probiotics may be appropriate for your pet.

How treat diarrhea in your dog or cat ?


1- Treatment of the main cause of the diarrhea :
If it was from food change ,return to the normal food.
Unhealthy food must give your dog or cat intestinal antiseptic.
If the cause was worms ,deoworming your dog or cat with the appropriate type of dewormer.
2- Periodic deworming your dog or cat with 2 successive doses in-between 15 days.
3- Make sure that the food offered to your pet is hygienic and microbial free.
4- Over-the-counter medications: Over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medications like loperamide should not be given to pets without veterinary guidance.
5- Seek veterinary attention: If your pet's diarrhea persists for more than a day or two, is accompanied by other signs of illness such as vomiting, lethargy, fever, or loss of appetite, seek veterinary attention immediately.
