Dog Cough - Causes and treatment of Cough in Dogs
Cough is a common problem in dogs and pets animals and can cause severe respiratory distress especially if not treated and complicated.
There are many causes of cough in Dogs , we will talk about some of it here .
1- Bronchitis and inflammation of the air passage .
2- Tracheal collapse " Collapsed trachea " common in younger dogs and has sound of cough like " Goose Honk ".
3- Heart Diseases : CHD " Congestive heart disease " , Endocarditis , Heart worm , and Mitral valve inflammation . " Check the video in below link "
4- Cough from infections : Many infectious agents like bacteria ,viruses,fungi and parasitic infections that can cause cough from inflammation in the lung , bronchi or upper respiratory tract. " check the video in the link below "
5- Paralysis of the larynx " Laryngeal paralysis "
6- Sneezing : this is the sound when dog is exposed to dust or sensitive environment that cause the dog to sneeze .
7- Choking and Foreign objects : Many dogs can eat something that may lodge in the throat causing persistent cough and severe respiratory distress .
8- Tumors can cause cough also
Diagnosis of Cough in Dogs :
1- Blood testing .
2- Xray and ultrasound .
3- Endocardiograph.
4- Biopsy from the respiratory tracts .
5- Endoscopy of the lung.
6- Veterinary check up.
7- Serology.
These tests are greatly used to differentiate cause of cough and determine the main cause if cough .
Treatment of cough in dogs :
1- Please contact your veterinarian or your vet unit for more help .
2- Antibioticas and anti inflammatory can be used for lone peroid according to the vet opinion.
3- Treatment of the the main cause of cough .
4- Periodic check for animal health .
5- Some simple cough does need treatment and might disappear with time specifically of your dog is eating well and active , and some severe cases of cough that cause off food and ill dog must be check by the vet
