Anemia in Dogs: (Methemoglobinemia) in Dogs

Blood contains hemoglobin, which in turn carries oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. Methemoglobin results in the oxidation of iron and forms a form of hemoglobin but can not carry oxygen.

In normal cases, Methemoglobin is converted to hemoglobin to maintain its quantity. However, excessive
Methemoglobin in the blood is insufficient amount oxygen for the body's tissues.

A clear sign of anemia is the change of blood to brown instead of red.

Anemia can be caused by a genetic defect or caused by exposure to a certain chemical state.

1) Symptoms of anemia:

1) Lazy

2) Weak body

3) Breathing quickly

4) Change the skin color and mucous membranes to palness

5) Jaundice Diseases

6) Vomition

7) Low body temperature of the animal

8) swelling  of the face or jaw

2) Causes of Anemia:

1) Genetic disorder

2) Acetaminophen ingestion (Acetaminophen)

3) Ibuprofen ingestion

4) Objective anesthesia using benzocaine (benzocaine)

3) Diagnosis of anemia:

Your doctor needs to know if your dog has ingested acetaminophen or ibuprofen or if you have used topical medications.

Blood tests should also be performed to examine the quantity of methemoglobin. If the quantity of methemaglobin is chronic it will reveal the presence of large amounts of red blood cells.

On the other hand, if anemia is severe or the reason is exposure to drugs such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen or even the use of topical medications will make the doctor looking for evidence for the injured member.

It is also possible to do a blood test where the doctor gets a drops from the blood of the infected animal and put on a white absorbent paper as well as a point of natural blood next to it.

If the dog suffers from anemia, the blood of the animal will be brown colour more significantly than the red color of the natural blood spot.

4) Treatment of anemia:

Light and moderate cases No treatment is necessary.

If it occurs, discontinue use of the medicine.

The high dose of acetaminophen and ibuprofen stimulates the vomiting process.

Hereditary animals have an average life expectancy and do not require treatment

Severe anemia requires blood transfusion

Defect in the proportion of blood-directed elements resulting from vomiting, diarrhea and kidney injury.

In severe cases of anemia, intravenous methylene blue can be injected to reduce the number of methemoglobin

5) Animal Care:

Careful use of acetaminophen and ibuprofen medications. If accidentally swallowed by your animal, you should urge them to vomit and take them to the veterinarian immediately.

If you give your pet ibuprofen for the treatment of pain, you should be aware of the symptoms of anemia. The natural color of the skin and mucous membranes should return to normal once the hemoglobin ratio has returned to its normal level in the blood.

The blood in the blood test should be bright red. If the methylene glove is a treatment you have used, the proportion of red blood cells should be monitored.
